Overview

Lipids that make up a large share of the skin barrier's 'mortar', helping keep water in and irritants out.

What it is

Ceramides are a family of waxy lipid molecules that, together with cholesterol and fatty acids, form the lipid matrix between the cells of the stratum corneum. This 'brick and mortar' structure is central to barrier function.

Ceramide levels tend to be lower in dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin, and can decline with age and environmental stress.

How it works

  • Topical ceramides help replenish the lipid matrix, which is associated with reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
  • A more complete lipid barrier tends to be less reactive to irritants and better at retaining moisture.

Potential benefits

  • Support for a compromised or dry barrier
  • Reduced water loss and improved moisture retention
  • Calmer-feeling skin when the barrier is stressed

Potential benefits describe what research and use suggest may occur for many people — not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary.

Who might consider it

  • Dry, sensitive, or reactive skin
  • Anyone recovering from over-exfoliation or harsh products
  • Readers in cold or low-humidity climates

How it’s used

  • Typically found in moisturizers and barrier creams.
  • Apply after water-based steps to seal hydration in.
  • Suitable for morning and evening use.

Things to know

  • Formulation matters: ceramides work best alongside cholesterol and fatty acids in physiological ratios.
  • Not a quick fix — barrier recovery takes days to weeks.
