Double cleansing pairs an oil-based cleanser with a water-based one. The oil step dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and sebum; the water step removes the residue and sweat. It originated in Japanese and Korean skincare, where daily sunscreen and long-wear cosmetics made thorough but gentle removal a priority.

Why oil first

Many sunscreens and cosmetics are formulated to resist water. A foaming cleanser on its own may struggle to lift them without harsh surfactants. Oils and balms dissolve these residues through simple chemistry — like dissolves like — and then emulsify with water to rinse away.

When you need it

  • Evenings after wearing sunscreen, makeup, or heavy pollution exposure
  • Oily skin with congestion (a well-formulated oil cleanser will not add oil)
  • Anyone whose single cleanser leaves residue or requires scrubbing

When you don't

Mornings rarely require it — a rinse or gentle single cleanse is usually sufficient. Very dry or reactive skin may find even two gentle steps too much. The goal is a clean surface without tightness; if a single cleanser achieves that, a second step adds nothing.
