Overview

A water-binding molecule found naturally in skin that helps hold moisture in the upper layers.

What it is

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan — a long sugar chain — that occurs naturally in the dermis, joints, and connective tissue. It is prized in skincare because it can bind many times its weight in water.

In cosmetic products, it appears at various molecular weights. Larger molecules tend to sit on the surface and form a hydrating film; smaller fragments may penetrate slightly further into the stratum corneum.

How it works

  • As a humectant, it attracts water from the environment and deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum.
  • The resulting hydration can temporarily plump the surface, softening the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration.
  • It does not replace the lipids that keep water in — which is why it is usually paired with emollients or occlusives.

Potential benefits

  • Immediate improvement in surface hydration
  • Smoother, more supple skin feel
  • Generally well tolerated across skin types

Potential benefits describe what research and use suggest may occur for many people — not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary.

Who might consider it

  • Anyone experiencing dehydrated or tight-feeling skin
  • Those in dry climates or heated indoor environments (with an occlusive layer)
  • Readers building a simple hydration step

How it’s used

  • Apply to damp skin, then seal with a moisturizer.
  • Found in essences, toners, serums, and moisturizers.
  • Works in both morning and evening routines.

Pairing with other ingredients

  • CeramidesHumectant plus barrier lipids is a classic hydration pairing.
  • NiacinamideWell tolerated together; both support barrier function.

Things to know

  • In very dry air, humectants can draw water from the skin if not sealed — layer a moisturizer on top.
  • Molecular weight affects feel and behavior; formulations vary widely.
