Then explore optional additions
Add one at a time. Give each four to eight weeks before judging it.
Essence
A lightweight, water-rich layer applied after cleansing — the signature of the Asian skincare approach.
- Why
- Adds a first layer of hydration and can carry conditioning ferments or botanicals.
- Consider when
- If skin feels dehydrated, or if you enjoy a layered ritual.
- Observe
- Does skin feel more comfortable after two to four weeks? If not, it may not be needed.

Serum
A concentrated step for a specific concern — hydration, tone, texture, or barrier support.
- Why
- Delivers a higher concentration of an active ingredient than a moisturizer typically does.
- Consider when
- When you have one clear goal and know which ingredient addresses it.
- Observe
- Give it six to eight weeks. Introduce one serum at a time.
Ingredients to read about: Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Peptides
Treatment
Higher-intensity actives — retinoids, exfoliating acids — used with care and usually in the evening.
- Why
- The strongest evidence for changes in texture and aging sits in this category.
- Consider when
- When the foundation is stable and skin is not reactive. Not during barrier recovery.
- Observe
- Expect an adjustment period. Reduce frequency if irritation appears. Sunscreen becomes non-negotiable.

Additional hydration
A richer moisturizer, sleeping mask, or occlusive layer for dry climates or dry seasons.
- Why
- Slows overnight water loss when the environment is pulling moisture from the skin.
- Consider when
- Winter, heated or air-conditioned spaces, air travel, or after over-exfoliation.
- Observe
- If skin feels congested, the layer may be too heavy — adapt to the season.
