Overview

A well-studied form of vitamin B3 associated with barrier support, more even tone, and reduced appearance of pores.

What it is

Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that participates in cellular energy metabolism. In topical skincare it has one of the broader evidence bases among cosmetic actives.

It is widely used at concentrations between two and five percent, where it is generally well tolerated.

How it works

  • Associated with increased synthesis of ceramides and other barrier lipids.
  • May reduce the transfer of pigment to surface skin cells, supporting a more even tone over time.
  • Has been studied for its effects on sebum regulation and the appearance of enlarged pores.

Potential benefits

  • Barrier support
  • More even-looking skin tone
  • Reduced appearance of pores and excess shine

Potential benefits describe what research and use suggest may occur for many people — not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary.

Who might consider it

  • Combination or oily skin
  • Uneven tone or post-blemish marks
  • Readers looking for a gentle, versatile active

How it’s used

  • Serums and moisturizers, morning or evening.
  • Concentrations of 2–5% are common and well studied; higher is not necessarily better.

Pairing with other ingredients

Things to know

  • Some people experience flushing at high concentrations (often 10%+).
  • Older concerns about combining with vitamin C are largely not supported by modern formulation evidence.
