Lipids that make up a large share of the skin barrier's 'mortar', helping keep water in and irritants out.
What it is
Ceramides are a family of waxy lipid molecules that, together with cholesterol and fatty acids, form the lipid matrix between the cells of the stratum corneum. This 'brick and mortar' structure is central to barrier function.
Ceramide levels tend to be lower in dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin, and can decline with age and environmental stress.
How it works
- Topical ceramides help replenish the lipid matrix, which is associated with reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
