PDRN — polydeoxyribonucleotide — is a mixture of DNA fragments, most commonly extracted from salmon. It has a clinical history in wound care and regenerative medicine, particularly as an injectable, and has recently become a headline ingredient in Korean serums and ampoules.

The clinical background

In clinical settings, PDRN has been studied for supporting tissue repair through activation of adenosine A2A receptors, which are involved in reducing inflammation and encouraging new blood vessel formation. Trials in wound healing and certain skin conditions — mostly with injectable or medical-grade formulations — have shown encouraging results.

From clinic to cosmetic

The leap from injection to serum is a large one. DNA fragments are relatively large, water-soluble molecules; how much penetrates intact stratum corneum is uncertain. The hydrating, conditioning effects users describe are plausible and consistent with the formulations these products use. Regenerative effects of the kind seen in clinical studies should not be assumed.
