Overview
A water-binding molecule found naturally in skin that helps hold moisture in the upper layers.
What it is
Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan — a long sugar chain — that occurs naturally in the dermis, joints, and connective tissue. It is prized in skincare because it can bind many times its weight in water.
In cosmetic products, it appears at various molecular weights. Larger molecules tend to sit on the surface and form a hydrating film; smaller fragments may penetrate slightly further into the stratum corneum.
How it works
- As a humectant, it attracts water from the environment and deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum.
- The resulting hydration can temporarily plump the surface, softening the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration.
- It does not replace the lipids that keep water in — which is why it is usually paired with emollients or occlusives.
