Overview

Snow fungus — prized in Chinese cuisine for deep hydration and often described as a natural counterpart to hyaluronic acid.

What it is

Tremella is a pale, frilled mushroom simmered into sweet soups and dessert broths across China. In tradition it 'nourishes yin' — the body's cooling, moistening aspect — and is associated with plump, hydrated skin.

Its polysaccharides can hold a remarkable amount of water, which is why tremella extract now appears in topical skincare as well.

How it works

  • Tremella polysaccharides are strongly water-binding, comparable in laboratory tests to hyaluronic acid.
  • Studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity; human dietary studies on skin hydration are limited.

Potential benefits

  • Hydrating, soothing food with a long tradition
  • Antioxidant polysaccharides
  • A gentle dessert-soup ritual

Potential benefits describe what research and use suggest may occur for many people — not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary.

Who might consider it

  • Dry or dehydrated skin, especially in dry seasons
  • Readers curious about yin-nourishing foods

How it’s used

  • Soaked, then simmered until gelatinous — often with goji, jujube, lotus seed, or pear.
  • Look for pale yellowish-white clusters; pure white may indicate bleaching.

Things to know

  • Clinical evidence for dietary tremella and skin is early.
  • Long simmering is what releases its texture and polysaccharides.
