Overview

A herb used in Asian traditional medicine for centuries and now one of the most studied soothing botanicals in skincare.

What it is

Centella asiatica — often shortened to 'cica' — is a creeping plant native to wetlands across Asia. It has traditional uses in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and its triterpenoid compounds (asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid) are the focus of modern research.

It has become a signature of Korean 'barrier repair' formulations.

How it works

  • Triterpenoids have shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
  • Madecassoside and asiaticoside have been studied for supporting collagen synthesis and wound healing.
  • Frequently used to reduce the sensation of irritation and redness.

Potential benefits

  • Soothing for redness-prone or reactive skin
  • Support during barrier recovery
  • Antioxidant activity

Potential benefits describe what research and use suggest may occur for many people — not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary.

  • Skin adjusting to active ingredients
  • Redness-prone skin

How it’s used
